What is a Midspan? |
|
The Midspan is SEI's midspan Power
over Ethernet solution for VoIP, Wireless Access
Points, and other PoE applications. SEI's Midspan is
fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3af
Power over Ethernet standard and will also provide power
to many legacy devices. With
a Midspan there
is no need to replace your existing Ethernet
infrastructure to realize the advantages of Power
over Ethernet.

|
Why use Power over Ethernet (PoE)? |
|
PoE allows power to be supplied to end devices, such as Wireless
Access Points or VoIP Phones, directly through the existing LAN cables. By
supplying the power mid-span, you can centralize power distribution
and backup without the need to increase infrastructure.

|
What are the advantages of mid-span power? |
|
Midspans eliminate
the cost and need to upgrade to power enables
switches to run PoE applications. Installation
costs as well as desktop and wall clutter
are significantly reduced. SEI's Midspan allows
centralized backup power for all connected device which is less expensive, more
reliable and easier to maintain than individual
UPS backup. The Midspan can be
supplied with backup power from the existing
Ethernet switch UPS or, to increase reliability,
with its own dedicated SEI supplied UPS.

How does a Midspan increase Quality of Service? |
|
Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) telephony allows the convergence of voice and data traffic
on a packet switched data network. Organizations implementing this technology
must provide QoS equivalent to that of traditional PBX and Centrex solutions.
This requires centralized power and battery backup for VoIP phone sets to
guard against the loss of AC power and the resulting loss of phone service. For
a technical discussion of this topic, see our white paper, VoIP
Phoneset Power Via the Ethernet. While not formally termed QoS, other Ethernet
applications such as wireless access points and security cameras also have
high availability requirements. SEI's Midspan,
coupled with a UPS, provides simple, centralized, guaranteed power for VoIP
phonesets and other Ethernet-based applications.

|
How does SEI's Midspan reduce cost? |
|
With a full 24 ports of power for the cost of a typical 12 port solution, SEI'sMidspan allows
easy migration to IP-based telephony with no expansion costs and without
the replacement of expensive network infrastructure. Our Midspan can
either be supplied with battery backup using the switch UPS or to increase or
to increase reliability, with its own dedicated SEI DC UPS.

What do I look for in mid-span power? |
|
Consider the following: Is it a cost effective solution? Is it manageable through a Web/SNMP interface? Can power be backed up independent of a central UPS? Where is it made? Is the manufacturer licensed to make and sell the device so it doesn't infringe on the patent? How many ports are powered by each PoE chip? Is the manufacturer experienced delivering power inline?

How do I add backup power? |
|
If you lose building power, midspan devices are
typically backed up using standard UPS methodology.
However, these devices add a significant
additional power draw on the UPS which can
severely impact hold-over time. Thirty minutes
of hold over for a typical
switch configuration can be reduced to 5
minutes or less by adding a midspan and 24
VoIP phones. Upgrading or replacing the existing
UPS to maintain adequate hold over is
very expensive.
SEI's Midspans have an
integrated UPS interface to accept their
own battery hold-over. This Battery pack
provides power directly to the PoE devices
without stealing power from the switch's
UPS and is available in a variety of
hold-over times to meet specific needs.

Why work with SEI? |
|
Founded in 1977, System Engineering International is a leader in centralized, premises powering. Our products power the majority of Centrex phone systems in the U.S. With a tremendous presence in the large business, education, and government markets, SEI has the experience to support the demanding requirement of the enterprise customer.

What happened to the Juice Box? |
|
SEI has decided to use the generic description, "Midspan Injector" in place fo the name "Juice Box." The Juice color of the original units have been retained to maintain a continuity with the Juice Box name, quality, and reliability. |
